There are so many ways to communicate with the people we love and our friends – but nobody could have recognized five years ago that Facebook smileys would be playing such a large part in our lives as we enter a new decade. In less than ten years, Facebook has changed from a little known website for people at one American university into a worldwide phenomenon which everyone uses and everyone loves!

From the moment that Facebook chat was introduced into Facebook, people have been wondering about how they could use chat emoticons and smileys in their conversations online. Some people thought that because of Facebook's very cool and clear style (they generally seem to avoid flashing text and glittery graphics) they would not include and smilies or emotes, but that wasn't the case. In fact, the largest social network in the world included lots of very cool and easy to use smileys, but the problem was that nobody knew where to find them. So what did they do?

People started to experiment with different combinations of keys and buttons on their keyboards. The quest for who could find the most Facebook chat emoticons was on! In fact, some websites put partial lists of Facebook smileys on their pages to try to trick people into thinking that they had found them all, but we know that's not the case.

Eventually, some people even hacked the code of a Facebook page so that they could find the codes to enter all of the smilies and icons in their chats – and they found severall hidden Facebook graphics which nobody could have suspected. Did you really think that Facebook would include a Pacman graphic?! Did you ever have in your imagination that the people who had built this chat software would include a devil symbol and an angel symbol? It was almost impossible.

Facebook admins and devs keep adding new smileys to their lists, and so they also need updating almost every day.
